Helping the horse slaughter bill in the House
CALLING all horse protection activists and advocates.
We at the Fund for Horses want to make our appeal to those who have the power in the U.S. House of Representatives to move HR 503 out for a vote even more dynamic.
As of this writing, HR 503 has 201 co-sponsors. Our aim is 215. That means attracting 14 new co-sponsors as quickly as possible.
To that end, we have employed two full-time lobbyists to help, BUT they need your support so when they visit with Representative offices they have the huge added bonus that the Representatives have heard from their constituents favoring our position.
We have a lot of new members, so we will outline the steps to take:
1. Do you know who represents you in the U.S. House of Representatives?
You will need your zip code.
If your zip code splits a district, you may need your 9 digit zip code. Find it here and use it to identify your U.S. Representative at this link:
Print the page with your U.S. Representative’s contact information or make a note of it. Even better, bookmark the page for easy access any time.
2. Has your U.S. House of Representatives co-sponsored HR 503?
Check here to see.
3. If they have NOT, then please write them a letter for faxing.
What to Say
In your letter, state you are opposed to the slaughter of horses and export for slaughter. Although the three remaining horse slaughter plants have been closed in the United States, we are under continued threat of new horse slaughter plants opening in other states. In the meantime, thousands of our horses are being exported to Canada and Mexico. HR 503 is necessary to protect American horses from this grisly practice.
If you are a horse owner, please note this, and be sure to personlize your letter.
A handwritten letter is always best. As mentioned before, you can print out your letter if your longhand is not easily read.
No Fax, No Worries
If you do not have access to a fax, and do not have time to go to a neighborhood shop with fax facilities (a one page fax will cost about $2), we can fax it for you. BUT we need a signed letter, which will mean either inserting an image of your signature in a Word document OR scanning your signed letter. If you can do either of those, email it as an attachment to vivian @ fund4horses dot org, and we will fax it for you.
What if My Rep Just Won’t Listen?
We realize that some of you have been contacting your U.S. Representatives continually over the past year and half, with no result. You can still help by spreading the word to your family, friends and colleagues who live in other districts, and in other states.
Please bear in mind too that your U.S. Representative may be up for re-election. Politicians do not like threats, and it will get nothing done for the horses to write to them saying you will be casting your vote elsewhere this election if they do not co-sponsor the bill. However, you can certainly bear it in mind, and vote accordingly.
