Excerpts:

Over the last month, Mr. Cattoor and his feral quarry have been doing battle under the dry, horizon-to-horizon skies of northeastern California and a neighboring Nevada county, with humans the inevitable victor.

More than 1,200 horses have been captured during the current roundup, much to the chagrin of people like Simone Netherlands, an animal rights advocate who says that the roundups — part of a nationwide push to take some 12,000 horses off public lands — are cruel, expensive and unnecessary.

“They’re running at full speed for miles and miles for hours, with babies, little babies, and they don’t let up on them,” Ms. Netherlands said. “They’re stressing them out to the max.”

and

“When they get in here, they know something’s going on,” said Dave Cattoor, 68, a straight-talking roundup expert who has been herding horses since he was 12. “The chips are down.”

  1. I am sorry reading that just makes me want to Puke !!!! There is nothing , i repeat nothing humane or necessary about the Round ups ………………the BOTTOM LINE is GREED…………………Pure GREED, They really must think we are a bunch of dummies out here…………………………….That will believe all there nonsense sugar-coated lies…………..The MUSTANG is the only TRUE living Legend left in America ,we should stand for the immediately release back to the Land that BELONGS to them, to live their lives as we Americans want them to live FREE and PROTECT from all Harm……………… They give to us visual of the true meaning of FREEDOM, True Spirit, and the meaning of courage, and for that and that alone we must not let anyone take that away from them or us…………. Truly one the very BEST things In Life Should remain FREE. the WILD MUSTANG.

  2. YOU MIGHT THINK THIS IS A GOOD ARTICLE AND THAT IS TRUE IF YOU ARE A FRIEND OF MR. CATTOR AND APPROVE OF WHAT HE IS DOING BECAUSE THE ARTICLE REALLY PUT HIM FORWARD AND IN THE LIGHT. THERE IS NOT ONE INSTANCE THAT IT SPEAKS OF THE DAMAGE DONE TO THE HORSES OR THE LITTLE ONE. IT IS JUST ANOTHER ARTICLE WHERE THE HORSES ARE PUT IN THE BACKGROUND AND THE BAD GUY FORWARD. ANOTHER CREDIT FOR THE BLM.

  3. The article is inaccurate in its numbers of wild horses left in the wild. Instead of the picture of Dave Cattor, a convicted felon (he was caught selling wild horses he had rounded up for blm to a slaughter house in Texas) but he is one of the “good ole boys”
& blm is an equal opportunity employer–they should have shown the 2 mares brought in with blood streaming out of their nostrils and soaking wet with their exhausted little foals beside them. Running wild horses to exhaustion is cruelty to animals and must be stopped. If you or I did this we would be arrested! As we should be and so should the Cattors. We need a MORATORIUM on all wild horse and burro roundups–period ,end!!!!

  4. I am so sick of the BLM and its treachery toward the INNOCENT Wild Mustang !!!!!! Everyday I read all about whats going on with them, they are ROGUE the BLM is UNTOUCHABLE so far !!! WHY ???????????????? Our President continues his deaf ear !!! This so Heartbreaking these innocent beauties bleeding from their noses , little foals looking for their Mothers we have to endure their suffering and are helpless to help them, Why can they be allowed continue this MURDERING Rampage right in front of America??????? These dirty filthy bastards no good poor excuses for human beings have to be stopped…………………………………………

  5. I have to believe Dave Cattoor (and the BLM) hates horses. His quote, as written in the New York Times above, is vindictive and completely without compassion; it’s almost as if Cattoor is waging a war against the horses and enjoying it. Nothing would make me happier than chasing him for miles with a loaded Black Hawk helicopter. He is an abomination who feeds on power over animals….. a “Michael Vick” toward horses.

These roundups are against federal law! Yet, we remain powerless to stop this ongoing crime. I am very happy to have signed Vivian Grant’s impeachment.
