Madeleine Pickens responds to BLM rejection of her wild horse sanctuary

Mrs Pickens responds to the BLM rejection of her wild horse sanctuary plans which she has been working to put together since 2008.

The BLM issued its rejection with a late placed press release via Bob Abbey, full of the usual disingenuous opinions. It appears that Abbey did not even have the courtesy to contact Mrs Pickens first.

Hot on the heels of the Abbey press release, Martin Griffiths of the Associated Press filed another report. It is full of more hypocrisy, this time via BLM spokesman Tom Gorey. However, equal time is given to some facts in the matter.

No matter what side of the fence you are on, why does none of this seem to add up? Like the number of wild horses and burros rounded up, captured, died during and after, are in herd areas, and stored in short-term and long-term holding, it does not.

Mrs Pickens’ response is in two parts.

  1. It seems that the American public is simply paying for the cattle and food animals to live on the land appropriated for the wild horses and burros. This is translated through the cost of the roundups and holding facilities.

Before the days of factory farming (CAFOs), industrialization, land fragmentation etc. etc., there was never a need for animal control in the wilderness.

Wilderness – does it really exist anymore? Sadly, mankind has pushed this term to extinction at the expense of all of the creatures that were meant to co-exist with us. Most disturbingly we have been plunged into chaos in the quest for ultimate comfort and amenities, global competition and greed.

Hunting comes to mind. Before humankind interfered with wildlife habitat there was never a need for a “cull” of wildlife to “protect” them – what an oxymoron if there ever was one. Man has moved in at the expense of what nature is all about. Although the wild horses are not being “hunted” to cull them from their natural environment it is nonetheless the same principle and their fate is the same.

The BLM would have it otherwise apart from the fact that horses are and should not be considered “game” (I hate that term) – they devise a plan in hopes on convincing us to believe they are helping the situation. But then, what else can we expect? They are part of the US government, the very crux and source of why it is happening.

Horses, deer, wolves, elk, bear –whatever – seem to be fair game for eradication in the wild simply because they interfere with so-called “progress”; progress defined as the ability of mankind to destroy the earth in pursuit of _____??? You fill in the blanks because I am not sure what we are in pursuit of any more. We are on the road to destruction if you ask me.

The wild horses suffer at the hands of the escalating inability to control what once was a valued asset because of greed, power and the incomprehensible need to rid our lives of life as we should know and live it. We all are being stripped of what it means to be human and are losing all of what life was and is supposed to be.

  2. Bob Abbey / Salazar and the BLM are all corrupt cowardly and cruel liars ! BLM thugs belong in prison for violating the 1971 FREE ROAMING WILD HORSES AND BURRO ACT and illegally killing, removing , harassing wild horses, they need to get the 13 MILLION PRIVATE WELFARE CATTLE /SHEEP OF OUR PUBLIC LANDS !
    GOD BLESS MADELEINE PICKENS !

  3. This is BLMs own sign “Help Protect Our Wild Horses: Report Violations of Injury,Harassment,Death or Removal” and they are killing our wild horses! Don’t let them get away with this–call the President 202 456 1111–and keep calling for every horse-life that has been ended (over 365 in 2010)–and for the thousands that have been removed from their designated rangeland. BLM quote” There is no law we won’t break; no right we will not violate to make a profit.” Americans are paying these thugs??

  4. I have written a note on my notes on FB regarding this sad day. There is something not legal going on. I know how the horse business works and the killers are making a profit. They figured out a way to do this without anyone stopping them.

When the US closed all the horse slaughter plants. The killers were out of business so to speak. It was costing them allot of money to ship to Canada and Mexico.

I totally support Madeleine Pickens and I know we will all fight together to have our horses free. What is the difference in holding pens or on her land. The difference is THE KILLERS WILL NOT BE MAKING ANY MONEY.
