March for PMUs with the Int’l Fund for Horses

Since 2009, we have chosen a horse welfare issue, and focused heavily on it for the entire month of March. You may remember our March for Wild Horses and March Against Horse Slaughter campaigns and the significant impact they had.

This year we are concentrating on the horses abused and killed to make the Premarin family of drugs: March for PMU Horses.

PMU ranches may be decreasing in North America but the profits made from the prescription and sales of Premarin and Prempro are not. Anything but.

This will increase substantially with the approval of Aprela, which we learned from an industry insider is to be heavily marketed as an osteoporosis drug to men and women!

With the downsizing of the N. American “pee farms” the attention this issue received declined as well. We will not forget these horses.

The Int’l Fund for Horses has worked diligently to keep PMU horses in the spotlight through Tuesday’s Horse with Jane Allin’s timely and analytical articles (thank you Jane), social media and billboards (chiefly outside women’s health centers).

MEDIA CAMPAIGN

Among other actions we are taking, we are lining up radio ads right now for the entire month of March.

Much of our media campaign is funded through an individual grant. Please make a donation to help meet the remaining costs.

If you have already given, what a hero you are to these horses, and we warmly thank you for your continued generosity.

If you have yet to give, please join us. A donation of $5.00 will go much further than you may think, so please do not hesitate to give at that level. We really mean that!

All of the stations we use archive their shows. This means people will hear these ads long into the future after the original ads have aired. This is so worth doing. We hope you will help.

Our deadline for securing these spots is February 29th. So “leap” into action and come to the aid of the horses and women impacted by the PMU industry.

  1. I am ecstatic that this is the campaign for this year. This has been a cause that I have been an avid fan of. I think I even lost a potential job placement (when I was more naive) and the employer had asked us what we would do if we could do “anything” we ever wanted to do besides work there. I was so proud when I said that I wanted to purchase a spread and rescue the PMU horses. Well, I’m sure you can imagine the rest of that story. This is definitely the right time for this, with Aprela on the horizon. I am sure I’ve already seen ads on Canadian television. Can’t wait to hear more about the March for PMU Horses.

  2. I ran down the top editors and corresponded with (and cancelled my subscription to) a magazine that ran these ads.

They are everywhere and our physicians also need to know about this. When you go to the doctor, take a packet of info with you for them to look over. Hand it to them yourself.

    • Great idea Janet. We already have a Patient to Doctor letter which has had good success. We have updated it for March for PMU Horses and will be posted soon.

      • That is great! Hope wording is such that old gals like me can use it! (Or to put it more elegantly, ‘women beyond their child bearing years.’)
