One of Corolla’s wild horses was killed Monday night when it collided with a sheriff deputy’s patrol car.
Currituck County authorities say it happened around 10:30 p.m. at mile post 21 in Carova Beach on the beach strand.
The sheriff’s office says Deputy Jessie Taylor was paroling the area when two of the wild horses were chasing each other, and one collided with his cruiser. The horse suffered a broken front leg, along with other injuries and had to be euthanized by the Wild Horse Fund herd manager.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
Sheriff Susan Johnson said it was a very unfortunate incident and sometimes these collisions are unavoidable.
Karen McCalpin, executive director of the Corolla Wild Horse Fund tells WITN News that it is routine for deputies to be patrolling in the area at that time of night. She says equipment on the patrol car showed the deputy was not speeding, only going about 26 to 28 miles per hour when the collision occurred.
This is the third fatal collision this year with the wild horses, McCalpin says the most she seen in her three years with the organization.
