Belgian and Dutch consumers were shocked to learn of widespread horse slaughter-related cruelty in North and South America. Undercover video footage aired on three major news programs showed horses designated for slaughter are routinely starved, dehydrated, injured and abused.
Horse meat is commonly available in Belgium and the Netherlands where consumers are almost completely unaware of the cruelties of horse slaughter. Most believe what suppliers claim on their websites, that the meat on their dinner plate comes from contented, grass-eating, healthy horses. The story begins by asking, “Do they [consumers] really know where it comes from?
The 8½ minute news segment was produced by GAIA, a respected animal welfare organization from Belgium, with much of the footage provided by Animals’ Angels USA. The dire conditions of horses at slaughter plants, feedlots and markets in Mexico, Brazil and the U.S., have generated talk of boycotts and moratoriums on the import of horse meat from these countries.
Last month Gaia asked Animals’ Angels for footage from Mexico and the U.S. to help with a European campaign to publicize the conditions endured by horses in the slaughter pipeline. Gaia had recently finished undercover investigations in South America and had gathered their own ample evidence of brutality.
“I really doubt I’ll ever eat horse meat again,” said one man. “They may say they fixed the problem, but I’ll never trust them again.” Read full story >>

You have to keep in mind all of the off track betting and gambling that is connected with horse racing. This state rakes in millions in tax revenue from all of this. If they could set up horse slaughter plants that is only a short drive from the race track and the breeders in the state all the better for them. Because horse racing is a business like any other where the breeders can write off everything on their taxes. Losses of any description they write off. Whatever they do its for themselves not the horses. The animals are of little importance, they are just looking for that one horse that can make them rich and famous.
It may blow the bottom out of their slaughter plant idea when the horse meat trade from North America which includes all of South America/Canada falls apart. The bomb shell about the cruelty may be enough to stop horse meat shipments to the EU countries that eat it. After all, when it dawns on the consumers that they are eating meat from starving, sick horses from South America I don’t think it will set to well with them. And that don’t include the drugs in the meat.

Maybe this video will stay up on YouTube. It certainly isn’t as graphic as many I’ve seen, and maybe that’s the point. Give people a taste of what’s really going on and hope they’ll do more research. If the people of Belgium and Holland learn from it, the word could spread around Europe and Scandinavia. The question is will those who know take any action?

Horse slaughter is brutal inhumane , a horror, it is not a nice service for people to humanly put to sleep a horse, – it is a cruel brutal predatory industry that steal horses, tricks people in getting there horses , robo breeds, deviously makes up lies such as abandoned horses and unwanted horses to legislatures to get them to repeal or pass laws that would allow them to again exploit and brutalize horses. This is unacceptable to a huge majority of Americans.

The FOIA -(freedom of information act )shows horses bound for slaughter in the U.S. endured shockingly cruel treatment. Photographs documented horses with legs ripped off, eyeballs hanging on their cheeks and other severe injuries.Earlier GAO documents raise additional disturbing humane issues. A 2004 GAO report found horses were slaughtered while conscious.
