BLM issues closure of public lands during Elko wild horse round up

Wild Horses Rounded Up by Helicopter for the BLM
Wild horses are rounded up by helicopter by the thousands for the BLM, including the massive gather in Elko District of NV starting July 9th.

ELKO, Nevada — (July 1, 2010) Certain areas on public lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in northwestern Elko County will be temporarily closed to public access, use and occupancy at varying times and locations from July 6 through July 31, 2010.

The temporary closure involves about 27,000 acres and is necessary to help ensure the safety of the public, contractors and government employees, and wild horses, and to ensure the orderly progress of the Tuscarora wild horse gather operations. The public will have the opportunity to attend the gather on specifically scheduled and escorted visitation days.

The sites identified for temporary closure are locations the BLM has used during previous gathers in the Owyhee, Rock Creek and Little Humboldt Herd Management Areas over the past 10 years. Some of the gather sites are on public land and some are on private land.

The temporary closure would be in effect only on public land. Not all of the lands identified for temporary closure will be closed during the entire period. The public will be authorized to use those areas where gather operations are not in progress. Areas from which the public will be temporarily excluded will be dependent upon the actual area of operation which will be variable according to the needs of the gather contractor. Areas temporarily closed to public access will be posted at main entry points with signs.

Once gather operations are concluded in specific areas, those portions of the public lands will be reopened. The temporary closure may be lifted prior to July 31 if gather operations are completed before that date.

Helicopters will be used during the gather operation.

The BLM will remove about 1,100 excess wild horses from within the Owyhee, Rock Creek and Little Humboldt Herd Management Areas (HMAs) and outside of these HMAs to bring the number of wild horses in the area to the appropriate management level range of 337-561 animals. The HMAs cover about 455,000 acres in Elko County, about 90 miles northwest of Elko, Nevada.

For more information, call David Overcast, Tuscarora Field Manager, at 775-753-0320.

No change in BLM procedures or politics. Another “closed” roundup, except by special appointment, many of which are never kept. The only thing transparent about the BLM is their agenda: To decimate America’s herds of wild horses and burros. -Ed.

  1. The FBI to investigate the BLM. Sorry, but that makes me laugh. It would be a white wash. Some non-governmental body needs to investigate the BLM.

  5. America is a nation founded on the principles of God…..why have we allowed the bloodthirsty such power that everything that is beautiful in nature is destroyed just to please corporate gangsters?

We are building sorrow on earth and in heaven when we allow these beautiful creatures to be slaughtered…when we allow creation to be harmed we are really putting all of heaven into tears and sorrow. And then we have the audacity to ask God to bless our nation and give us peace and prosperity?

    1. Sam ~ There is no overpopulation of wild horses. The problem is UNDERpopulation and the BLM’s manipulating the numbers so they can claim there’s 5,000 horses on a range when there’s really 500 – and then they remove them all.

At Calico their numbers were so far off they had to spot the gather after taking about 1,000 horses less than their target number because their chopper contractors couldn’t FIND any more. Of course, they don’t admit that, and I have no doubt they will somehow manage to get horses from other ranges and chase them into Calico so they can show us the 600 horses they claim are still there. However, they absolutely REFUSE to allow independent verification of their numbers. Several people including well known wildlife ecologist Craig Downer, and other qualified range managers have gone looking, and the most that were ever sighted was 31-by Craig Downer. He did see 350 cattle however.

Those horses were reintroduced to their homeland by the Spaniards some 500 years ago, and they got along perfectly with the other native wildlife and the habitat until the white man came along with his millions and millions of non-native cattle. Cattle are Eurasian derived and are poorly adapted for the high desert environment. The damage that they are doing has been very well documented for years.
