BLM still restricting access to Tuscarora roundup despite Judge’s ruling

Cross-posted from Channel 4 Reno

Reno, NV – (Jul. 19, 2010) Six hundred and twenty wild horses have been rounded up in northern Elko County, but so far, the public and the media have been unable to view the Bureau of Land Management roundup. Horse advocates say, the BLM is violating their first amendment rights.

According to the BLM, the reason the Tuscarora roundup is not open to the public is because it is being conducted on private lands and the land owners will not allow the public or the media on their property.

Just last week, while in federal court over this very issue, the BLM never mentioned that the horse trap and holding sites were on private land or that access would be restricted by land owners. (emphasis added)

During the hearing Judge Larry Hicks agreed that horse advocates and the media should be given reasonable access to the roundup.

According to a BLM spokesperson, the agency must abide by the wishes of private land owners.

“We so want for the public to see what we’re doing,” said BLM spokesperson Doran Sanchez. “We’re in the process of scheduling observation days, but we have to coordinate as we move forward and make sure we don’t violate the private property owners’ rights as well.” Full report and video >>

  1. What the BLM is doing at Tuscarora is all against the Law, The BLM is getting away with breaking the Law in no uncertain terms , Our Government needs to enforce the Law, Who is responsible for enforcing the Laws they are Breaking??????…………….. fencing off the water so they cannot drink is cruel and unusal treatment of any living thing, is this not grounds for the BLM s dismissal???

Since forever Horses have been exploited, abused slaughtered, by the BLM and still yet they remain poised, full of pride, dignity , magical and mystical and beauty, they maintain their herds almost as if no matter what is done to them they remain in control of themselves despite The BLM………………….They also look to us for caring about them, and speaking out to help them, they do what ever is asked of them still for us inspite of the Rogue BLM, We need to give them what we promised inspite of the BLM and its treachery towards them, we need to take away from the BLM its Rogue power… and we will ………………………. If ever there was a single breed of animal that deserved to be free it is The Horse…………………….. If we put all of knowledge together we can do this………………………… The time is so right to save them now !!! And totally dismantle the BLM and its treachery, and start a caring Agency that will stop at nothing to get them their land back and restore their Freedom like it was intended and suppose to be………..

  3. BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT NEWS RELEASE:
BLM Schedules Observation Days to View Tuscarora Wild Horse Gather
Reno, Nev.— The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Elko District has tentatively scheduled two observation days—Friday, July 23 and Saturday, July 24—to provide the media and public opportunities to view ongoing BLM gather activities to remove excess wild horses in the Tuscarora gather area in Elko County, about 90 miles northwest of Elko, Nev.

Like that’s really going to show us how the horses are being treated. That’s enough time to do their clean up. Get rid of the ill horses, etc. etc. Observers should be able come in anytime so we get a true picture of what’s gong on. What a bunch of crap.!! It just never ends!!!

  4. EVERYTIME I HEAR TALK LIKE THIS FROM THE BLM IT MAKES ME SICK. IT IS TYPICAL COVER UP LINGO. MORE THAN LIKELY THEY ARE PAYING THE LAND OWNER TO USE HIS PROPERTY THAT WAY THEY CAN STEP AROUND THE JUDGE’ S ORDERS. WHEN THEY DO ALLOW THE PUBLIC TO SEE SOMETHING ON PUBLIC LAND IT WILL ONLY BE A PUBLICITY STUNT TO THEIR ADVANTAGE. REMEMBER WHERE TO VOTE IN NOVEMBER.

  5. Here is another “pearl” from December 12, 2009, when the BLM sold horses to a known kill buyer who runs a feedlot in Elko – the mustangs most likely went to slaughter:

Here is Animals Angels’ investigation of one of Olsen’s favorite feedlots in Moses Lake, WA: http://www.kaufmanzoning.net/InvestigationoftheslaughterhorseindustryinWashingtonStateMay2008externalreport.pdf

Looks pretty apparent to me what they’ve been up to. Just my two cents.

  6. All of the slaughter feedlots are on private land too and are EXEMPT from any laws, but no one in government is mentioning that either! I will bet my boots that the BLM, USDA, all state ag departments are in the horsemeat business while the counties play dumb and look the other way. Who’s going to stop them? Our federal courts are just as corrupt in my opinion. Wonder how many of them hold stock in Belgian and French meat packing companies….

Here’s an example of EXEMPTION for Bouvry Exports in Shelby, Montana:

“Despite problems documented by state investigators, the Bar S is
privately owned and therefore exempt from the regulations that govern
    commercial feedlots…”

    1. I totally agree with you Debbie. The reasons are the same: keep observers away; do what you want with them such as sell them on for slaughter. Who is going to stop you?

  7. “We so want the public to see what we’re doing.” Pure crap based on so many years of pure crap! If the BLM wanted public eyes on this (or any other capture) they’ve had plenty of opportunities. The video didn’t play very well for me, even on our newish MAC. What was said about the next gather or maybe trap site being held on public land?

    1. We couldn’t get it all either. Something on the order that things would be different with those gathers. Yeah, right. Different how? How many they kill? How many they shoot to kill who are deemed “down” when they don’t “respond to the helicopter.” What is the BLM’s definition of THAT?
