CALGARY — The trial of three men accused of wrongfully shooting a feral horse near Sundre has been adjourned for three weeks to allow the Crown to assess whether new evidence will adversely affect its case.
It had already been delayed for a day from its scheduled Monday start, and defence lawyers say further investigation may have forced prosecutor Gord Haight to seriously assess his position.
“The Crown did some further video yesterday, which we need to have them disclose to us,” Willie deWit, lawyer for Jason Nixon, said outside court following the adjournment to April 27.
“We’ve also given some very important evidence to the Crown to consider. They need to look at it and assess where they want to go with the case after looking at this. Obviously, we can’t discuss what that evidence is, but it’s pretty significant in our estimation.”

First of all I would hope that you would have enough integrity to publish conclusion of this story; the COMPLETE EXONERATION of Jason Nixon and the other men that just happened yesterday in an Alberta courtroom. Hunters came forward with pictures of the horse just after it FELL down onto the road while giving birth, the day before Nixon and his crew found it.. This evidence proved that Nixon was telling the truth all along, that no one shot the horse and that they had just moved it off the road because of safety.
Because of political pressure to convict ‘someone’ over the killing of wild horses ; this poor man and his family have been put through hell. He was competely innocent of all charges but as a result of this case has lost his job, his wife lost her job, he cannot find work in any other treatment centres and he now owes 100,000 in legal bills.
The guy who ‘reported him’ was a CRACK and METH addict from Calgary who had been staying at the lodge at the time made up the story to get his hands on the 25 000 reward. And the RCMP and Crown went to trial with literally no evidence that this horse had been shot, just the word of the addict. This is one of the most disturbing cases of wrongful prosecution i have ever seen.
This man who has given his life to helping street youth and addicts, no criminal record, was taken down by 10 RCMP officers with guns drawn screaming obscenities at him in front of his young children; including one female officer who reportedly screamed; ” get on the ground you big F-ing retard” These were not the local RCMP who were good friends with Nixon but rather a group that had been brought in from nearby Didsbury and Edmonton and wanted to play at being a swat team apparently. When they took him into the local detachment one of the officer’s who was a friend, whispered in Nixon’s ear; ” get yourself a good lawyer and dont tell these a-holes anything” referring to the outside police that had performed the ‘takedown’
They could have called him and had him come in himself – the guy is one of the most well liked members of the Sundre community and has given his life to public service.
And this is how the police treated him. And then reading the ignorant and hateful comments here makes my blood boil. People were calling his home and making death threats against him and his little boys over this case. FOR A YEAR. A totally innocent man’s life is now ruined and yet you still have posts here calling him ‘Evil”.
The local RCMP detachment had given this man and Mountain Aire lodge a freakin COMMENDATION a month before this arrest happened for his contributions to the community including first aid , search and rescue AND DEAD ANIMAL REMOVAL.
He told the Edmonton Journal that despite everything he would still have moved the dead horse off the narrow gravel road ( with a cliff on one side) because better he go through this than a van load of kids on camping trip crash and die.
I would hope you would be deleting these awful comments directed at this poor man

THIS HORSE SLAUGHTER MUST STOP. IT IS BETTER TO PUT A HORSE TO SLEEP THAN LET THESE BASTARDS GET AHOLD OF THEM AND THE TREATMENT THE HORSE MUST GO THROUGH AFTERWARDS. A LOT OF THESE HORSES ARE SICK AND MORE THAN LIKELY THEY ARE TREATED WITH MEDICINE THAT IS NOT GOOD FOR HUMANS. HOWEVER, THE SLAUGHTER BUYERS DO NOT CARE ABOUT THE HORSES OR THEIR FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS IT IS ALL FOR THE MONEY.

So this is the Kind of Low Life people that walk amongst us, Im scared very scared, I would like to ask these people , How do you kiss your Mother or your children or for that matter how do justify doing this and sleeping with yourself every nite , with this atrocity on your heart and soul, after committing a heinous crime such as this???????? If I was the Judge I would ask these questions, this person or persons has no place in society ???? and obviously is very sick and needs help also I would ask why in the name of heaven would you kill 3 defenseless foals who like you have every right to be able to live??????……………….. My judgment would be based on the answers I would receive from these questions……………….. There can be no justification of these murders and yes thats what they are murders……………In my eyes only a jealous, sick coward would ever commit a crime of this nature……………. My judgment on this would be of the most appropriate kind…………… This person or persons are extremely dangerous , and do not belong in our society…………..

Amen to that! We NEED better laws, yesturday! What part don,t they not understand? shame on our gouverments, for turning a blind eye. Everyday, there is Animal-Abuse, everyday, there is touture and pain, somewhere. All because, evil can get away, so easily!??? R.I.P pretty ponies….x
