Six Thoroughbred horses were burned alive inside of a holding trailer Friday evening, after a cigarette — likely tossed from a passing vehicle — flew into one of the stalls, N.C. Highway Patrol officials said.
The bizarre blaze happened around 10 p.m. on Interstate 95, near the 135 mile marker, which is near Rocky Mount. Authorities said a truck carrying the horses was traveling northbound on I-95, when the driver noticed smoke coming from the trailer.
The truck driver and a passenger pulled over and discovered that the bed of hay in the horses’ trailer was on fire, and quickly tried to extinguish it. The fire grew out of control, and eventually engulfed the entire trailer, killing all the horses inside. Continue reading >>
