It’s been a good couple of months for the Science and Conservation Center, a Billings-based nonprofit that develops wildlife contraceptives.

The center produces porcine zona pellucida (PZP), which is the active ingredient in a contraceptive vaccine.

In February, the Environmental Protection Agency approved the vaccine for use in wild horses, meaning there’s the possibility that demand for it will increase significantly.

With the demand for the only EPA-approved wild horse contraceptive vaccine comes the need to produce more, and on Monday, the center got additional good news on that front with the announcement of a $100,000 grant from The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to help expand its Henry Bergh Training Annex, named after the ASPCA’s founder.

“We were very impressed that this very tiny staff could really change how we deal with wild horses in this country,” said Jacque Schultz, senior director of the ASPCA Equine Fund.

Hmmm. Why doesn’t the HSUS have its bulging wallets out? Just asking. ~Editor

  2. I don’t understand. How is this helping “preserve” the American Mustang if they are being rendered sterile?? This would still, over time, decimate their numbers. Why would the ASPCA support such a strategy?

  3. Any group that helps the horses is OK in my book. I keep telling my politicians that if they pass the no horse slaughter bill, we the people will take care of the horses and this is one more example. I don’t have much money cause I’m on social security, but any extra I have goes to taking care of the horses and that won’t stop.

    1. This is what happens when an animal welfare organization goes “corporate”.

      I have heard varying reports on HSUS and PZP; they either own it or have the patent on it, something along those lines. So why are the ASPCA giving donation dollars to Dr. Kilpatrick? HSUS supposedly has many more millions than the ASPCA. And I am not saying the good doctor doesn’t deserve it.

      What is most tragic, is that the HSUS have said time and again that if wild horses were administered birth control, this would eliminate the roundups. As we have seen over the years, the herds are being destroyed with both birth control and roundups.

      I know Dr. Kilpatrick would disagree with that, and give a wonderfully scientific explanation as to why. However, I don’t think you need a PhD to see our wild horses and burros are being remedied extinct!
