It has been so long since any of the horses aimed at the Kentucky Derby have been reported injured and out of the Run for the Roses — thankfully — we thought the trend had run its course (pardon a very tired pun). Sadly, that is not the case.
Here is what the Kentucky Derby injury trail looks like so far this year.
Just a reminder, this list is not comprehensive; just the ones we have noted in the media. Please feel free to give us a heads up any of the horses we have missed.

Off the Kentucky Derby Trail: 2012
HORSE | TRAINER | REASON |
Stephanobetatee | Graham Motion | Chipped pastern. |
Algorithms | Todd Pletcher | Condylar fracture, left foreleg. |
Out of Bounds | Eoin Harty | Fracture, left foreleg. |
Fed Biz | Bob Baffert | Hind end issue. |
Spring Hill Farm | Todd Pletcher | Right knee fracture. |
Junebugred | Steve Hobby | Ankle chip |
Consortium | Kiaran McLaughlin | Right front ankle chip. |
Gentlemen’s Bet | Wayne Catalano | Condylar fracture right front ankle. |
Chips All In | Jeff Mullins | No injury disclosed; rested for a summer campaign on the turf. |
Sky Kingdom | Bob Baffert | No injury disclosed; needs 60 days rest. |
Secret Circle | Bob Baffert | Injured seisomoid; surgery not required. |
Will be interesting to see who the winning trainer of this year’s Kentucky Demolition Derby is. It may be a dead heat between Baffert and Pletcher. Of course, that is unfair. We should give equal time to the breeders.

Thank you Girly. Sadly this happens all the time. However in this instance the horses were too injured race.

At least these guys were responsible enough to not race them with the injuries.

I don’t understand why people support this industry. I have no problem with the idea of racing, per se, but racing and training babies is sick and abusive. I refuse to promote any racing of two yr. olds. Pathetic.

Like I have said before no one knows how many foals are injured and destroyed long before they ever see a racetrack because of birth defects or broken bones. There is no one keeping count so the number of deaths is unkbown.
