Horses tagged for slaughter for human consumption.
Just because there is a market for horse meat in some countries does not mean the U.S. must be their supplier.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A Colorado-based horse advocacy group says a New Mexico company seeking to become the nation’s first slaughterhouse for horses since 2007 should face fines for violating laws on waste disposal.

The Albuquerque Journal reports (http://bit.ly/J9Fxis) that the state Environment Department received a letter this week from Front Range Equine Rescue calling for fines against Valley Meat Co. The Roswell-area slaughterhouse has hauled 400 tons of composted cattle parts from its property, after two years of prodding by the state Environment Department.

But Front Range Equine Rescue said the company should still be fined for past offenses highlighted by a USDA inspector in January 2010.

Fines can reach $5,000 daily per violation, so Valley Meat could be subject to millions in fines. However, Auralie Ashley-Marx, chief of the Environment Department’s Solid Waste Bureau, said Friday that there are mitigating circumstances, such as the recent removal of the waste and the lack of a market for De Los Santos’ compost.

“This is not a black and white case,” she said. “Sometimes there are limiting factors that are difficult to overcome.” Continue reading >>

  1. LOL – the limiting factor is the absence of a willingness to do things right. It is disgusting for this Valley View or whatever euphemestic name for the hellhole of death and rot to allow cattle brought into this world by mankind breeding them to die and rot. Disgusting. These people only want to do away with the horses which will be refused at the border. No sense in alllowing them to die at Presidio.

  2. As usual, the USDA is exhibiting its spineless , useless existence by ignoring its responsibility to the American taxpayer. If New Mexico wants a horse-rendering plant in its state, along with the cost IN AMERICAN TAX DOLLARS for inspectors to inspect horse meat for overseas buyers, then the people deserve whatever comes of this company’s presence: stink, contaminated ground water, rotting animal carcasses, and lowered property value. Good luck!

    1. You are absolutely right! I lived only 30 miles from Dallas Crown in Kaufman, TX, so I KNOW what those hell-holes are like – and the horse theft that goes with being so close to on of them.

The USDA did NOTHING in ’80s and ’90s, so why expect anything now when their budget is smaller than ever?

  3. WHAT AN EXCUSE. ARE YOU TELLING ME VALLEY MEAT COMPANY CAN NOT DIG A LARGE ENOUGH HOLE TO PUT THE WASTE IN. THAT IS A LAUGH. SOMEONE IS CERTAINLY DOING A COVER UP. VALLEY MEAT HAS SUCH A DISPOSAL PROBLEM WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE IF THEY HAD A SLAUGHTER HOUSE FOR HORSE. THE ENTIRE COUNTY WOULD HAVE TO MOVE AWAY. POOR BABIES.
