Summary:
Though true restorers of this continent’s ecosystem, wild horses and burros have been unfairly targeted for elimination. Over the centuries, they have borne our burdens and helped us along life’s way, which makes it doubly unfair that they should be blamed for what we humans have done. As always, they stand ready to help us do the hard work now so desperately needed to restore our shared home.
This stirring and amply illustrated, 300-page book fully justifies America’s magnificent wild horses & burros while countering the biased machinations against them. Written by an ecologist who grew up observing these animals in the West, it presents new evidence concerning their history & evolution in North American then describes their many positive contributions to soils, plants, animals & people. It outlines what must be done to restore these returned natives as naturally self-stabilizing populations: an intelligent approach called Reserve Design, which has been successfully employed world-wide.
The author is president and founder of the Andean Tapir Fund and has helped set aside millions of acres of natural habitats for wildlife particularly in the northern Andes. I ordered Craig’s book from Amazon. I am not done reading it but want to say, if you are looking for a highly intligent and comprehensive source on the wild horse ranges and lives – GET this book. It will be a classic reference and you will be proud to have it in your library. I will have it with me whenever I get a chance to meet Craig, so he can sign it for me. It is that good.

Hooray for you Janet, and thank you for commenting on Craig’s book. Anything done by Craig is the “word” on the subject of wild horses. How exciting you get to meet him and have him sign your copy. He is at the same time intelligent and sensitive, a wonderful combination. The book: a collector’s item for sure, and great reference.
