Although we do not approve of people keeping exotics as pets, we could not resist this portion of the story.
The New York Times has a series called “Kids Draw the News”. Violet, age 8, of Brooklyn, illustrated the paper’s recent runaway zebra and pony story.
The artwork is just too good to be missed and gives wonderful insight into how the little equines probably felt.
You can see just about anything on the streets of New York City, but a zebra chasing a pony is something that no one had seen until this week, when Razzi the baby zebra and his friend, Casper the pony, escaped from their pen on Staten Island and went trotting down the street.
A man took a video of them running through a parking lot.
They were eventually caught and returned to their owner, who also keeps chickens and peacocks in his yard.
Here is an article about the runaway zebra foal and the pony.
The article states that the owner, Mr. Schirripa said he “bought [zebra foal] Razzi – short for Paparazzi — for $6,000 a couple of months ago from a breeder in Wisconsin, for a petting zoo he ran at an Octoberfest event for the Staten Island Boys Football League, which has its headquarters nearby.”
