Kentucky Horse Park may host sale that could include “stacked” horses

We are not big fans of the Kentucky Horse Park as they promote and host rodeos and what we view as other abusive equine events. Look what they are getting up to now.

Below is an introductory excerpt from a detailed article by reporter Janet Patton for the Lexington Herald-Leader.

“A controversial breed might be getting a new hoof in the door at the Kentucky Horse Park, and equine welfare groups are not happy.

“The Horse Park is in negotiations to allow a sale this month of Tennessee walking horses, possibly including some wearing controversial hoof pads that exaggerate their gait. The Kentucky After Christmas Sale hopes to offer about 300 horses for sale Jan. 25 and 26.

“Horse Park director John Nicholson said that legal activities have a right to use the state-run park. Padded horses are legal — although several groups headquartered on the park’s campus, including the American Association of Equine Practitioners, are working to change that.

“The organizers of the sale say they want to be transparent and will use inspectors that the state specifies.

“But questions have been raised about one of the sale’s partners, David Landrum, who was accused of abuse last summer involving a horse in his care.”

  2. Those of us that live in Kentucky know that it is the horse negelct captial of the world. If the Horse Park can’t speak out against cruel equine practices then they need to change their name to the Horse Industry Park! When will Kentucky step up and protect horses instead of covering up the cruelty and neglect of all the industries!!!!! We are all sick of it!!!!!

    1. You are so right, Shelly. Sad to say it’s not just neglect but abuse that is so prevalent.in KY. There are 20 kill auctions in KY where the horses are whipped and crowded together and sent to slaughter. Many people ride or drive their horses until they are worn out or break down. They are treated like they have no feelings. Our cruelty laws are some of the most lax in the country. What a disgrace.

  3. I cannot believe that in this day and age of animal abuse awareness, that the Kentucky Horse Park and the great state of Kentucky turn a blind eye to this abuse. What a disgrace to Kentucky.

  5. Anyone being investigated for abuse of a horse, horses, should NOT profit from this sale as a “partner,” i.e. David Landrum! Of course he would ok stacked, padded Tennessee Walking Horses. And are not these poor abused, tortured equine babies put up for “sale” for the slaughter market?! OMG. What a sham this after Christmas “sale” is!
