(Jan. 31, 2013) — Two congressmen wrote to the Department of Interior this week to demand information on the progress of its investigation into whether more than 1,700 federally protected wild horses sold to a Colorado man may have been illegally sent to slaughter.

The investigation was triggered by a ProPublica story published in September showing that since 2009 the department had sold truckload after truckload of mustangs to a horse-slaughter proponent named Tom Davis who acknowledged shipping many of them out of state in violation of Colorado law. The fate of the horses is unknown.

Reps. Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., and Ed Whitfield, R-Ky., have sent a letter to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar pressing him to explain what role the agency had in selling so many horses to a man the letter calls “a longtime kill buyer.”

“As you are aware, the ProPublica revelations have provoked a substantial public outcry,” the letter says. “Leading organizations and the public have stepped forward to express their concern with the idea that America’s wild horses could be sold by their government to be slaughtered. … We are troubled by your Department’s lack of response to [their] legitimate concerns.”

  2. I agree with GreenAcres. Hand wringing and whining won’t change attitudes in Washington. Bi-partisan action is what we need. Let our voices rise up – conservative, liberal or independent. Write write write our politicians!

    1. Won’t do you any good. That’s why thousands of US horses are still going to slaughter after all of this time. The politicians in the Senate are 100 % responsible for not passing any of the anti-slaughter bills the past ten years. None of them cares what happens to the mustangs no more than Obama does.

  3. I will bet Obama ignores this letter or turns it over to Salazar. Obama has his and his cronies interests to worry about he’s not interested in the horses. He’s not running for reelection so he could care less.

  5. I am heartened by the bi-partisan action of Reps Grijalva and Whitfield on behalf of horses considering the considerable pressure they must be under by slaughter proponents in their states. I hope everyone reading will send notes or appreciation and encouragement to these gentlemen. I know I will!

    1. That is a terrific suggestion. Thank you GreenAcres… If people would send a handwritten note of thanks that will increase chances twofold that they will actually see it! Of course, it is all good.
