Ask Committee leaders to remove King Amendment from the Farm Bill

2013 Farm Bill process chart from farmersmarketcoalition.org.

The Farm Bill generally covers five years. Congress did not get it done last year. They seem determined to get it done before they adjourn for their annual August break this year.

We need to act fast. Why? Please keep reading, and start calling!

The recently passed House version of the bill 2013 Farm Bill (pdf, 630 pp) contains the dangerous King Amendment.

If left in, it can be used to overturn critical State animal protection laws across the country.

A Conference Committee is finalizing the Farm Bill right now.

TAKE ACTION

Please call the following four committee leaders asking them to remove the King Amendment:

  • Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich – (202) 224-4822
  • Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Miss – (202) 224-5054
  • Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla – (202) 225-5565
  • Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn – (202) 225-2165

Keep your calls to the point and respectful. Say something like:

“Hello, I am calling to ask you to please oppose and remove the King amendment from the final Farm Bill. The King amendment threatens States’ rights concerning many issues important to me. Please see that the King amendment is taken out of the Farm Bill.”

Time is of the essence. That is why only calls will do. Thank you for making your calls right now.

      1. After several tries, my senators will not respond as to how they would vote on the King Amendment when the Bill comes for a floor vote. But the SNAP program is out of the House Bill and that is a major source of contention to the Senate. I believe the President won’t sign the Farm Bill without SNAP. One of my senators is more concerned about sugar subsidies in the FARM bill than anything I asked him. In the meantime, Valley Meats is demanding to start horse slaughter in NM, and another hearing regarding this is in front of the federal judge August 30. All of this is going on while Congress can’t get its act together, and they are on vacation besides. :(

  1. Shows the hypocrisy of some politicians. King is one of the loudest at commenting on how government should stay out of states rights, until it suits something he wants.

    1. Thank you so much Debbie. We all feel overwhelmed. More bad news coming from the rodeos soon. In the meantime, let’s get rid of this disgusting King Amendment so we can get on with other business.
