Letter to the Editor
by JANICE C. JACKSON
I am grateful for the actions of U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen to crack down on the illegal practice of “soring” of Tennessee Walking Horses (“U.S. eying illegal ‘soring’ of show horses,” June 6 article).
In “soring,” the feet of the Tennessee Walking Horses are burned with chemicals and their hooves injured intentionally to force them to step high into an exaggerated gait known as the “Big Lick,” an advantage for the horse to win in the show ring.
These animals have been victims of “soring” for more than 50 years. How many more years must they endure this unspeakable pain?
Sadly, Cohen is the only lawmaker from Tennessee who has the principles and compassion to take a stand against the trainers and owners of these horses. The cruelty done to these horses is a disgrace to our entire state.
