Racing babies … to death

RESEARCH by JANE ALLIN

“I think there’s probably a much stronger tendency to have two year old racing nowadays than there used to be….and the lure of prize money. There’s a great incentive to race their horses too young too immature. In the old days, you bought your yearlings, you broke them in, you castrated them, you turned them out. You didn’t think about them until late 2 year old and mostly three year olds. The big money came with three-year-old racing. The current owners want two-year-old racing and I think it’s a pity. I think it’s a pity because it certainly does cause the breakdown of a lot of two year olds.” — HorseRacingKills.com.

American horse racing is a bloody business as the relentless volume of its killings in training and race meetings demonstrates. The above quote was published in “Racing Babies: Are Two Year Olds Too Young” by Jane Allin which we published at the beginning of 2012.

Let’s take a look at how U.S. horse racing is devouring its young 8 years on from that report.

Here are the two year old racehorses reported killed by horse racing as of 30 Jun. 2020, as documented by Horse Racing Wrongs.

There will be more deaths of course. The soundest bet an individual can ever make on horse racing is that it will continue to mutilate and kill its horses.

  1. It’s all about wanting a quick return on their “investment” and these babies suffer. Many break down in training before even getting to race. FWIW
years ago the Keeper of the Stud Book of Australia published a report which revealed that only 55% of thoroughbred foals bred for racing actually went on to race. The 45% consisted of foals that were born with defects, yearlings unsuitable to train and babies that broke down in training. This study by the Keeper was for a period of fifteen (15) years and he resigned not long after the shocking statistics were made public. Cannot find any current statistics on this but I suspect not much improvement.

    1. Thank you Carolyn. It is the same the world over with horse racing, isn’t it?

My father bred a racehorse here and there, but he never sold one. He leased them to an “owner” or a trainer. That way we were assured that our horses made their way back to our family when all was said and done. That was decades ago. No one even knows what I am talking about now when I mention it, or they are pretending not to.

There is always a way to do the right thing my Dad said, if you are sincere enough about it.

Trying to follow the planned Brumbie killings but it’s hard work from the US. So cruel and totally unnecessary.

      1. So sensible of your father and so responsible. What a fine example of ensuring that no horse he bred went to one ‘good home’ after another or to slaughter. A wise and caring man. Sadly for the throughbreds purposefully bred for the industry today end up in the hands of callous, cruel and soulless people. I’m glad my father is not around anymore to see what’s going on in racing.
The situation with the brumbies is heartwrenching, same as the mustangs in your country. I don’t have any more news on the brumbies atm.
I came across an article (cannot find it now) about a jockey who was penalised for not pulling up a lame horse in a jumps race in Scotland recently – apparently he was the only horse left in the race to cross the finish line and therefore ‘won’. I guess if you google it, it should come up.
Don’t know if you heard that the blokes charged with animal cruelty at the Meramist slaughterhouse (October 2019 expose by our ABC 7.30 programme) received pathetic fines by a court in Queensland yesterday. The Irish blood in me is boiling.
