According to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) documents obtained by the CHDC and provided to VICE, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) banned shipping draft horses—a breed that can weigh more than a thousand pounds. Canadian Horse Defence Coalition image.

Canadians: Act now to stop live shipment of horses to Japan for their meat

Canada exports thousands of horses each year to Japan, a market where some consumers enjoy the meat as a raw delicacy.

According to the Canadian Horse Defense Coalition, in 2020 1,606 horses were live-shipped to Japan for slaughter, down from 2,800 in 2019. This translates to about $11 million in revenue in 2020 and $17 million in 2019.

CHDC animal law lawyer Rebeka Breder said the conditions the horses experience during transport cause distress and danger. Large, flighty animals are often crammed together without the adequate headroom required by law, the group claims.

“They’re exhibiting signs of stress. There have also been injuries, there have been deaths over the last several years,” Breder told CBC News.

“Generally speaking, the shipments are not safe for horses. We know that for a fact.”

Canadians, please share with your friends, family, neighbors. Thank you.

  1. Thank-you for giving this issue the attention it deserves.
For 5 years now, I’ve been writing several politicians and our Prime Minister Trudeau to stop this.
Every single letter’s response is worded almost exactly the same: “We ensure that the horses are comfortable and safe during transport.”
They always eliminate the obvious that the horses are going to slaughter and, we know, that they are not comfortable or safe.
The Canadian government is hell bent on sending horses, via live export, to Japan for slaughter.
As a child growing up in Canada I was always told and under the impression that Canada was a humane country that protected animals.
Sadly, I know now that Canada is way down on the list of humane treatment of animals.
In fact, all of our animal laws are antiquated, inadequate, and unacceptable.
They haven’t changed in years and every political party doesn’t have animal welfare anywhere on their agenda except the Green Party and they don’t have a hope in hell of getting a majority government.
I can keep writing and share this issue, but it’s doesn’t seem to budge any one of our politicians.

    1. Thank you Gina. It was even more shocking (if that’s possible) to read these horses are purpose bred. We thought maybe they were former PMU horses. But we were told they want young horses for their meat. It is all so depraved.

    2. Agree. As a Canadian I am disgusted with our governments when it comes to animal welfare and the plight of these and other horses that enter the slaughter pipeline. I was hoping that Trudeau and the Liberals would re-think this, but to no avail. They are equally as bad as the rest. An don’t get me started on Trudeau 🤐
