When the weather heats up, thoughts turn to ice cream. What do Vegans eat? We eat ice cream, just like everybody else. It’s easy to find at your grocery store and absolutely delicious, but sometimes a bit pricey.
So why not make it at home? Don’t have a churn or the time if you did? No worries.
All it takes is one ingredient – bananas – and a blender. Does it get any easier than that? And what a wonderful way to use those really ripe bananas going to waste while you wonder what to do with them.
TIP: Before you give up — if you are like me and hate cleaning the blender — check out this great tip.
Quick, easy blender cleaning: I add 2-3 drops of dish detergent, fill about 1/4 to 1/3 full with warm water. Blend on high for 30 seconds or so. Then rinse well. Done. Sparkling Clean! (Thank you 4eversixteen in comments at Instructable).
Try this recipe, and say it doesn’t taste EXACTLY like ice cream!
Step 1: Freeze Very Ripe Bananas.
Bananas that have turned brown work or nearly brown best for this.
Peel, cut into chunks and freeze overripe bananas (use this for this recipe and smoothies too).
Step 2: Blend to Perfection
At first, the bananas resist the blending. Don’t panic. Add them bit by bit. They’ll reach a nice chunky smoothie-like stage. But you’re not done yet! Keep that blender running for another 3-4 minutes, and watch in amazement as what you once saw as frozen bananas turn into a rich, creamy, silky blend.
Step 3: Enjoy!
Try this recipe as-is and see what you think. Then feel free to consider this a blank canvas for all of your ice cream dreams. Try adding dark chocolate syrup, maple syrup, peanut butter, flavored extracts, fresh berries or additional frozen fruits. Just like with smoothies, this one ingredient banana-based ice cream will take on the flavor of whatever you add to it.
