Is it too early to say New Year’s resolution? How about resolving right now to volunteer in 2019 with The Horse Fund?

The Horse Fund thrives because of our dedicated team of volunteers. We have two types of volunteers. But before we get to that, please know that we are not a rescue; we do not have any horses. We are an advocacy group protecting horses through intervention, education and legislation.

Full Time Volunteers

By full time we mean in terms of commitment, not hours. These are volunteer staff who work 2 – 10 hours per week throughout the year who are either (a) assigned to a particular issue or (b) assigned to an ongoing campaign.

Part Time Volunteers

These are volunteer staff who work when called on for short-term projects or to help staff on a particular campaign. Short-term projects can last anywhere from a few days to a few months.

What You Need to Have

• Regular access to internet service and a personal email account you check frequently.

• Internet research and reporting skills.

• Good written and verbal skills.

• Experience in any area of social media is always an asset.

• The ability to complete assignments with minimal supervision.

• Commitment to the Fund’s philosophy and policies.

• Confident you can think on your feet and be cool under pressure.

• The steely mentality necessary to face horrific acts of cruelties to horses.

• Disciplined work ethic.

• Reliability.

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

What You Need to Know

You do not need to be an expert on horse protection and safety issues. You can learn that.

You do not need previous experience with an organization like ours. Come as you are and bring what you have.

You do not need an in-depth knowledge of horses. You can learn that. However, any understanding you already have of horses and their needs will be very valuable.

What you need to have more than anything else is a deep love for horses and dedication to the betterment of their lives.

You also need an open heart and an open mind.

There’s nobody quite like us, who think or take action the way we do. We are leaders, not followers.

Foto Friday: Hank the Quarter Horse keeping cool while he can

Hank, a quarter horse, stays close to a fan to keep cool inside a barn at the Illinois State Fairgrounds Thursday in Springfield, Ill. Dangerously warm conditions are in the forecast for the Midwest over the next few days. Hank will participate this weekend in the Western American Quarter Horse Association Competition. Of course it wouldn’t occur to anyone to cancel at least some of the more strenuous events because of the heat or to competitors not take part. It would be so disappointing. Hank is no youngster either. -Ed.

FUNNY STORY

Some years ago now we came out with anti horse slaughter car magnets. They were really popular. Some of you have been with us long enough to remember them.

We eventually had to give up selling them. And here’s why.

We began to receive calls and emails from people saying that they had not received their magnets. We thought okay, it is always possible we overlooked an order or two. So we re-shipped them.

Then we began to get more calls and emails. I called everyone into the room and said we were going to have to step up our game and be more careful. Everyone nodded their heads in agreement. But the situation persisted. We couldn’t figure it out.

One day we got a telephone call from our local Houston Post Office.

A letter carrier had opened the mailbox close to our office to take the mail out and what did he see, but envelopes sticking to the inside of it. Quite a few too.

So there were our missing car magnets. But that’s not all.

When he reported it, they decided to call the local sorting office to tell them the story and suggest they might want to look inside their sorting bins there. Guess what? They found a few stuck in there too.

Bear in mind. These magnets were in padded envelopes. But they were strong enough to stay on moving vehicles, right?

We laughed so hard. And still wonder to this day if there are any more stuck out there some place.

Except for us and a few callers, I don’t know that we ever told this story.

Not to worry. This will not happen with your decals.
