Why: To help maintain an ecological balance on western rangelands, and preserve mustangs as “living legends.” BLM gathers some horses and burros each year to control the population and offers them to qualified individuals for adoption. Gentled wild horses in the United States are being used for trail riding, dressage, western events, and other disciplines. They are noted for their endurance, sure-footedness and intelligence. Burros are great companion animals and are sometimes used by farmers for predator control.
