RENO – (Sept. 2, 2012) — Federal officials have approved a management plan for the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern Nevada that calls for the removal of all wild horses and burros from it within five years.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials say the move is being made because the animals have a negative effect on habitat, and the refuge was created for pronghorn antelope and other native wildlife.

Horse advocates sharply criticize the refuge’s comprehensive conservation plan, which will guide its management over the next 15 years.

They say horses and burros lived in the area long before the refuge was created in 1931.

Sheldon officials say an aerial survey in July showed the 575,000-acre refuge along the Oregon border is home to at least 2,508 antelope, 973 mustangs and 182 wild burros. Full report >>

  1. When the whitehouse made killing anyone over 65 who needed medical help by denying that right has lived up to its promise to the American people, work hard pay your social security so you can have retired later now keeping that money from us is direct socialist attack on our land our right our way of life. Cattlemen have a lobbiest fighting for there greedy way of life. Get the cattle off our public lands and the horses and deer, antelope, birds can reseed our lands for better use. Obamas administration has ran targeted attacks on many groups it’s time for a change to restore our lands and our freedom now.

  2. Why is killing always the first answer? Then say, let’s make a “sport” out of it too. Killing is not a sport. If it is to you, you need to see someone about that.

  3. There were a couple of comments from “sportsmen” on the papers comment line about allowing the shooting of horses. The rationale was in managing the herd. Not a solution, but an excuse for “sportsmen” to kill animals for whatever twisted reasons.

  5. Getting an article ready for Labor Day, and came across this quote:

A thousand horse and none to ride! –
With flowing tail, and flying mane,
Wide nostrils never stretched by pain,
Mouths bloodless to the bit or rein,
And feet that iron never shod,
And flanks unscarred by spur or rod,
A thousand horse, the wild, the free,
Like waves that follow o’er the sea,
    Came thickly thundering on,…

  6. The only ones destroying the habitat are humans and their complete lacking in any sort of science to make decisions on land use. Get a clue, once again the horse developed in America. It is a native species

  7. The current white house goal is NOT to protect our American country as we know it. The values left unchecked and unprotected from our basic freedoms and our constitution are direct targets of a socialist government. If you haven’t seen or understood its beliefs then you’re living on borrowed promises. Even Harry Reid has been quiet since his party’s alignment to destroyed our nation. Wild Horses are just as wild as antelope. Protect our wild horses and our land now before the American way of life becomes history.
